Around 99% of the body’s calcium is stored in bone, meaning low Vitamin D or calcium levels can weaken bone structure and increase the risk of stress fractures.

Studies consistently show that maintaining higher Vitamin D status is linked with stronger bones and reduced injury rates in athletic populations. For athletes who train hard year-round, particularly those involved in impact or strength sports, this can be the difference between consistent progress and time lost to injury.

Vitamin D also supports muscle contraction, coordination, and repair. It influences muscle fibre composition, helping maintain and strengthen the fast-twitch Type II fibres responsible for power and speed.

From November to April in the UK, the sun’s angle is too low to produce sufficient UVB for Vitamin D formation. Even spending more time outdoors may not make a difference, the light simply isn’t strong enough. This makes winter supplementation particularly important, especially for athletes training indoors or early and late in the day.

Winter training often coincides with increased illness risk. Vitamin D is essential for regulating the immune system, helping to reduce infection rates and the duration of colds and flu.

Research links low Vitamin D levels to a higher incidence of respiratory infections, a major setback for athletes trying to maintain training consistency. Keeping Vitamin D levels in range may help reduce the number of days lost to illness and support higher-quality sessions.

For most people living north of the 35° latitude line (including the UK, Ireland, Germany, Poland, Canada, and much of the northern United States, such as New York or Chicago), sunlight between November and April is too weak for Vitamin D production. The same applies to those living south of this line in the southern hemisphere, such as southern Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, and Chile, during their winter months (May to September).

In these regions, the angle of the sun reduces the amount of UVB radiation reaching the skin, making natural Vitamin D synthesis difficult. This makes winter supplementation particularly important, especially for athletes who spend much of their time training indoors.

Those at higher risk of deficiency include:

  • Indoor athletes (swimmers, gym users, martial artists)
  • Office-based workers training outside daylight hours
  • People who cover skin for cultural or personal reasons
  • Anyone frequently using SPF above 8, which blocks UVB exposure
  • Individuals with darker skin, as higher melanin reduces UVB absorption – People with darker skin may produce less Vitamin D from sunlight, though new research suggests standard blood tests can underestimate active levels. Even so, limited UVB exposure in winter still increases deficiency risk, especially for indoor athletes.

Athletes with a history of stress fractures, bone or joint injuries, or frequent illness should pay close attention to their Vitamin D status. More importantly, they shouldn’t overlook the value of a comprehensive nutritional assessment, which may reveal deeper underlying causes of these health issues.

Supplementing Vitamin D safely requires attention to dose and monitoring. A daily intake of 1000–2000 IU (25–50 micrograms) is commonly recommended during winter to maintain healthy blood levels.

However, requirements can vary depending on:

  • Skin type
  • Age
  • Geographic location
  • Body composition
  • Existing Vitamin D status
