Relative Energy Deficit In Sport (RED-s)

Recover Stronger, Come Back Fitter

Underperforming, Tired, or Injured? It Could Be RED-S.

RED-S, or Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport, occurs when your body doesn’t get the energy it needs to perform and recover. This often stems from low energy availability (LEA) — when the energy left over after training isn’t enough to cover essential functions like metabolism, hormone regulation, or bone health. Over time, this can compromise physical performance, recovery, and long-term health.

If you’re feeling constantly fatigued, frequently ill or injured, or experiencing hormonal disruptions like missed periods, it could be a sign of RED-S. But the signs can be subtle, and many athletes underfuel unintentionally. Early support from a registered performance nutritionist can make all the difference.

Understanding Low Energy Availability (LEA)

Low Energy Availability means the body doesn’t have enough fuel for both training and vital processes like immune function, digestion, and cellular repair. While it’s common in sports with high training volumes, LEA is not always intentional — it often results from simply not realising how much energy daily activity, stress, and recovery require.

Athletes often underestimate what they need,  especially when there’s pressure to stay lean, reduce sugar, or cut carbs. Inadequate fueling forces the body into energy-saving mode, slowing metabolism and increasing injury and illness risk. Performance nutrition support can help address energy deficits without compromising training goals.

The Impact of RED-S on Performance and Health

Recovery takes more than just rest. Performance nutrition interventions are critical to restore hormone balance, support metabolism, and rebuild resilience. A tailored plan ensures you’re not just eating more, but eating smart, with the right macronutrient balance and consistent fuelling throughout the day.

Left untreated, RED-S can affect nearly every body system. It leads to fatigue, frequent colds, disrupted sleep, gut issues, muscle loss, and slower injury recovery. In women, menstrual cycles can become irregular or stop completely. Bone density may decline, raising the risk of stress fractures. Anxiety and low mood are also common.

Do You Suspect You May Be in LEA or Have RED-S?

It’s not always clear-cut. Gut issues, poor recovery, or mood changes don’t automatically mean RED-S. If you’re experiencing persistent symptoms, it’s advisable to consult your GP and request a blood test — not just to support a potential RED-S diagnosis, but to rule out other medical conditions that may present similarly. A proper assessment by both a qualified sports nutritionist and healthcare provider is essential.

We offer:

  • Detailed nutrition analysis and dietary review

  • Practical guidance to increase energy intake safely and at your own pace.

  • Macronutrient planning to support hormonal health and recovery

  • Education and long-term strategies to sustain energy availability

RED-S recovery is possible — with the right plan and support. Rebuilding energy availability can unlock better training, performance, and overall well-being.
